I chose to write this book to save a Civil Rights Movement story very few people know. To many the Movement means large demonstrations and the involvement of known leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. However, projects chronicled in my book – small, local and unheralded – occurred across the South during 1965.
A second reason for writing came from my students who complained loud and hard that they didn’t want to register and vote. The people in my book were willing to die for the right to vote, which is a far cry from the world we live in today.
