One thing I know is that you can’t make everyone happy. In my last blog I discussed audience. Let me give you a couple of examples of the responses to my book from “my” audience as of February 19, 2011.
One of my favorite quotes was from a black woman in Los Angeles. She commented, “You wrote about my grandmothers, my aunts, my relatives in ‘A Line in the Sand.’ Because of you, I understand them in a totally different way.”
On the other hand I got a call from a black woman who lives in Pineville, SC. Her comment, “I don’t know why you wrote this book, but it is full of lies.” Now that got my attention! Then she went on for forty-five minutes about all the lies in the book. I’m a patient listener.
As my friend Bettina says, “Obviously this wasn’t the book for her.” I have to get used to taking this type of criticism. This was the first time someone was so dissatisfied. It hurt. I will do better in the future.
